Silence of the Children

Sometimes I wonder how it all ended up like that.

We didn’t do anything wrong you know.

We were just too young to know what was happening,

What we had to do to stop this.

So we just watched.

Quietly watched the sounds of the beating,

Eyes closed.

The fast breathing

In, out,

Moaning.

We just watched,

Our eyes shut,

Guilty.

Our only crime was silence.
