Silence is injustice's servant,Action,
Silence is injustice's servant,
Action, its greatest foe.
But for whom can one advocate?
When their struggles are unknown?
You have, without a doubt, heard about it on the news.
On Twitter, videos of assaults being spread-
before the week passes, another Black teenager shot in the head.
Their name, a hashtag- of a list that's forever growing long-
While some live in fear, the rest of us ask-
"Where did we go wrong?"
I once lived so blissful that even my own issues remained hidden,
The pat-downs and slurs meant nothing.
9 and 11 were simply the numbers that surrounded 10,
Osama was the name of my Uncle's best friend.
This rug of of oblivion was snatched from under my feet,
and as I saw the horrors of my own life, the rest were revealed-
for each injustice was a part of a system.
I am the embodiment of struggle.
I am my grandparents seeking refuge,
I am my parents post-9/11,
but of all, I've learned to be more than what I am.
To value all humanity is to truly value oneself.
To seek justice is to seek truth.
I am.
