The Silent Heart

Silence.

A pain-filled plea pours past porcelain lips,

Glass tears drop from painted cheeks.

A boy stoops and gathers the tears in his hands.

He lifts the doll gently, and cradles her against his chest,

Whispering his love to her.

The crystal tears subside to a trickle.

She is safe.

From glossy eyes, the doll watches a girl approach.

The girl asks the boy if she can have the doll.

Angrily, the boy throws the sharp tears at her;

The girl screeches and grabs the doll.

The silent screams of the doll fall upon deaf ears.

Wrenched out of her hands,

The doll’s head comes crashing down upon the girl.

The boy takes another swing, misses.

He drops the doll, and the two children wrestle.

Broken and forgotten,

Shards of a shattered heart sparkle

Like millions of silent stars on the darkest night.
