Silent Music

It was late that night

or should I say early that morning

when you stopped breathing

I could hear it, before you even felt it

And I was there in the hospital

Standing next to you

As you were d y i n g

And they could do nothing for you

I could see it in your eyes

how scared you were

It terrified me

And just the night before

You had told me how for so long

you had just had one single wish

to die soon

and not be able to go back

because you knew if you had tried a knife

if you had tried a rope

you would have been too scared

But darling, you were scared then

And there was nothing I could do

but hold your hand and tell you that everything would be alright

Now I know I lied to you

because nothing is alright

and I don’t think

 it ever

can be

again

Because you, the loudest song in my ears, have suddenly went quiet

And you, the most beautiful melody the world has ever heard

went suddenly cold

and still

and lifeless

And I’m left to wonder why

I was given you

Only to have you cruelly taken away

Because you promised one time

that you were alive for me

but now you’re gone

and I’m still here

and I’m not quite sure what this feeling is

but it hurts

you’ve left an empty space in my very soul

because you died last night

and I barely had the chance to say goodbye
