A Simple Beat

A simple beat.

Four measures.

Guitar. Drums. Vocals.

The first verse drifts into my ears.

My heartbeat falls into rhythm with the bass.

Build. Bridge. Chorus.

I feel lifted. Powerful.

I’m feeling like a god

But I’m humbled by the artist’s genius.

A sudden switch from minor to major;

From pain to hope.

I’m walking but I can’t feel my feet touch the ground

Because the melody is carrying me.

I’ve experienced and seen everything-

wiser than all.

I’m blissfully ignorant-

greener than moss.

The universe is the back of my hand

But I'm oblivious to everything around me.

A final note. A last chord.

I’m left in silence.

The only sound I hear

is the echo of a refrain

resounding in my ears.
