A Single Girl's Friday Night
So this is what my life has been reduced to. Watching Friends reruns, eating ice cream from the carton and wearing sweat pants, a baggy t-shirt, glasses and of course- no bra. If I could afford to drink I would. Maybe it’d add a little life to my pathetic Friday night.
See they tell us to grow up so we try to by getting into relationships because those seem easier than work or taxes. And then somehow we get convinced at some point in our lives that our happiness comes from a guy. I don’t know about you, but my dog gives me more love than any guy ever will plus she’s half the work. Relationships are work and I really don’t feel like working. I can barely take care of myself let alone someone else.
And oh yes we’ve all been there. You meet a guy and he’s “perfect”! Everything is all hugs and kisses and you talk all night. He brings you flowers unexpectedly and says all the right things. And the BAM! He’s always at your place eating you out of house and home. Your toilet seat never stays down and you’ve made more sandwiches than you can count. Oh it’s no problem that you came home from work and you find him and his five buddies glued to the TV for Monday night football because he thought you wouldn’t mind. Besides you have the bigger TV and while you’re in the kitchen could you make him some snacks? Thanks babe.
And then suddenly things start getting strange. He doesn’t come over as often as he did. Dates are postponed because he had to work late. He…had…to…work…late...ok so you decide to go out to eat at local diner. You pull in and there’s a couple in the next car sucking face…but that looks like… no it can’t be…it’s HIM! With your best friend! Sucking face in the Denny’s parking lot!
You’re shocked. You’re stunned. You didn’t even make it into Denny’s but drove straight home. It’s a wonder you made it home alive because you can hardly see through tears let alone think clearly. How could this happen? You did everything right! Your sudden sadness has turned into anger and you smash his picture to ground but then collapse in tears on your bed where you stay for the next four days. You call him on the second day and tell him it’s over then cry some more. Your friends are worried about you so they drop by to find you dressed in his clothes withChinese takeout boxes everywhere. They dress you up and take you out where you get so smashed you start crying again. And you cry and you cry and you cry. Did I mention you cry? You think about all the good times: how he loved you and how he made you feel like you were the only girl in the world. Then you start to wonder how someone could just change like that. But then the song comes on that reminds you of him and you cry some more. You see couples holding hands and shout “Get a room!” To bury the pain you stuff your face with ice cream and watch Hallmark movies all day. Your boss calls and calls but you don’t answer.
Fast forward a month. You’re doing better. Not 100% but you’re getting there. Until you’re at Kroger in sweatpants and a t-shirt and you see him with her. Your first thought is HIDE! So you run behind the card section and wait until he goes down an aisle then run out the store leaving your dinner behind. Fast forward to today. You’re practically over him. The big things don’t bother you but the little things make you choke. But you’re working on that. So you’re eating ice cream and watching Friends reruns when you start to think that maybe you should put yourself out there again and maybe meet someone new. Then you realize the only good thing that came from all this hurt was that you finally realized that you are a strong independent woman who don't need no man to be happy. You get stronger even if you don’t see it and you find out that for the time being you really are happy with ice cream, Netflix and pizza rolls on any given Friday night.
