A Single Song

Memories rush to my head

as that single melody plays.

The dam I built in my mind breaks

and flood of tears drown my face.

Time freezes as I listen intently,

trying to hear your voice singing along

just once more.

I watch you in the passenger seat.

Your confidence and optimism

is my envy.

Your internal happiness is transferred to your goofy grin

as the sun gleams off your white teeth.

Laughter fills the car,

and we all dance along to your off-key singing.

When we shout the chorus,

I think about how much I love you,

glad that I have a brother

like you.

The song ends and

I snap back to reality,

realizing it was just a flashback.

You aren’t cured,

and maybe you never will be.

Anger flashes through me

like lightning.

My insides simmer with

fury.

Your addiction has changed you

but I still remember who you used to be.

I miss when you didn’t choose

a high over your hobbies,

your friends,

your family,

me.

I can’t believe a simple,

three-minute melody

can bring such emotions.

I stare at the bright blue sky

and clear my mind.

Music is the doorway to the forgotten.

And I promise,

I will never forget you.
