A Single Word

Heart palpitations and moistened hands

Cute people and lives I don’t yet understand

That could be changed by saying one word.

Saying one imploring word doesn’t kill

Uttering one word should not be made into such an ordeal;

Regardless, the faces that are kind,

The loves that I wish were mine,

Every relationship has to start with a single word.

I couldn’t utter, so I wrote.

The reaction was one I wish I hadn’t witnessed,

And the immediate lesson was “this boy’s heart is none of my business”.

But, then I saw the light

The anguish was all in my mind,

For a true romance can’t be full if it’s on just one side.

Using a single word cannot kill,

Neither can the dejection one can instill.

For not every puzzle piece fits together perfectly,

That is why the completion of a puzzle is such a feat

And I finally feel my heart ease and not quake over a single word.
