Sink or Swim

Caught in the fisherman’s net

I claw, kick, and scream loud

My voice does not come out

Around me, there is no sound

I watch the people around me

Their actions shatter worlds

I say too much, not enough

They won’t listen to me

I am not perfect in any way

We all have imperfect flaws

But no matter what I say

I am the one in the wrong

You know deep down

What’s right and wrong

Even if you hate me

Morality doesn’t change

You have so much hate

It has driven out love

I try to tell you this

But I have no voice

I stare at the vibrant sun

It’s oh-so far up and away

And I am caught in the net

Until I am thrown far, far

One day as I watched the injustices

A flying little birdy spoke to me

He told me to stop holding back

And so I opened my mouth

For the first time, words came out

For the first time, someone listened

The fisherman let go of the net

And now I am free to swim

I do not swim away

Instead I swim up

Towards the light

And you can too

We are all in this together

There’s only one way out

And that is to go through

With love instead of hate
