The Siren's Song
Within a darkened alleyway between a city’s streets
A harmony is heard, more lovely than the sweetest sweets.
And though you may be drawn to try and break the sonnet’s guise
First, you’ll find what you’re longing for, and then you’ll find demise.
Dare to venture forth some more, despite the dangers known
You’ll quickly find a lovely girl who’s singing all alone.
She draws you in, not with her wiles, but as you soon will see
She knows of how you feel alone and offers company.
In a world where genuine connection is a myth
Of course you’ll want to follow her, who else can you talk with?
Although you think you’ve found someone with whom you can connect
As soon as you try to approach, her trap will take effect.
When you draw near, she lashes out and starts to feast on you
But blinded by her magic, you still haven’t got a clue.
In your head you finally have a friend who you can trust
But in real life you’re on the ground, a corpse among the dust.
Once upon a time the siren lived upon the sea
But as the ships grew larger, no one else could hear her plea.
She had to make her way to land to find herself more prey
That is why she now is found within the alleyway.
Be warned, therefore, both boys and girls, and do not seek her song
For if you do then be assured, you won’t last very long.
In a world where people live their lives within a phone
She feeds upon our basic fear of being all alone.
