Size is Not an Option
I was due in two months, but I couldn’t wait
I wanted out, so I picked a date.
Too small they said, he’ll be here awhile
My Mom and Dad, though sad, would only smile.
They stayed by my side, all day and night
Time and time again, I would give them a fright.
My lungs weren’t mature, I would forget to breathe
And my buzzer would sound, then I would give a big heave.
My very first Christmas I spent with my family at my side
The present they wanted, was to take me home for a ride.
It wasn’t to be, I still had some growing to do
But a friend I would make, in isolette number two.
Our parents shared victories and consoled in our setbacks
But soon, I would leave and Skye would soon follow in my tracks.
We both would be small, but our desire ran deep
To keep up with our friends, no obstacle was too steep.
In elementary school our paths would cross again
My friend from the past, my now lifelong friend.
We wouldn’t let them beat us, we each held our own
And flourish we did, our desire to succeed kept us in our zone.
Though smaller in stature, it didn’t stop us from our dreams
We worked a little harder to become part of the team.
Equal to all now, maybe better than some
Smaller didn’t stop us from competing and having fun.
18 years later and friends we are still –
Getting ready for college, figuring how to pay the bill.
Academics and sports will help us both get there
Our desire and drive and families who care.
Never underestimate the small ones,
We will prove you wrong.
Because deep down inside, we are extremely strong.
