Sleeping beauty?
You may have heard the tale
of a poor and curious girl
who pricked her thumb on
a spinning wheel spindle
because the 'evil' queen
persuaded her.
But what if I told you
that's not the real story?
She was a beautiful young girl
who did not see the beauty
that everyone else saw.
She saw herself as grotesque
and bulging, and powdered
her face and touched her
baggy eyes and thinking
about all the reasons
why the man she saw
in the forest, would not
love her,
she fell into a deep abyss
of a destructive persona
and decided that she did not
deserve to live any more.
So she persuaded her fairies
that she was going to test
out a new spell and instead
of pricking her finger on a spindle,
as the stories tell,
she pricked more than her finger,
she pricked her whole heart,
who had not yet learned the magic
of love, and she pricked it with
the sharpest knife in the kitchen
and she pricked it deep into her heart
and as its beating slowed and her
blood poured out, she closed her
eyes and stitched them shut
so that she'd
never
have to wake up
again.
