Sleepless Nights and Starry Skies

5 am, 4:13, 2:30, 1:45-

Quitting time but we don't actually quit

We simply close our eyes waiting for our next inspirational idea to catch up with our minds

Waiting for it to curl up into a comfortable ball in one of the many corners of our skulls

Waiting for it to be shaken awake and sleepily make its way down our arms through our wrists,

Into the pens we hold in our mighty hands where they can spread their wings and fly.

Soaring through the minds of millions and the hearts of others

Letting its soft feathers touch everything it sees like a small child in a candy store.

So many want to fly that we can never get any to fall back asleep.

They keep us up lying awake for hours banging against the walls of our skulls begging us to let them out Saying their wings are crumbling to dust, blowing far in the land of forgotten memories.

If we do not let them soar they believe they will soon die,

Disappearing into nothingness.

It is their fault their earnestness that we do not sleep at night

And not only do they keep us all night but hog us all day alongside the necessities in life,

The constant needs that society is always asking from us -

To be normal is hard, to be rebellious is hard, to be different is hard, to be ourselves is hard.

Especially hard without sleep.

We do not choose to lay with our eyes open for hours haunted by our own words

We do not choose for society to need us 15 hours out of one day

We do not choose anything.

We are just simply here, a slave to our own inspirations, tools thoroughly used by the world

We are puppets on a string caged birds and caged tigers

We are battered souls that will never know sleep and always seek a pen to make birds fly and a paper, To make wings soar to places we could never see but still touch.

How could we let our own birds not soar,

How could we let them crumble into nothingness?

Our children…

They must fly to the places we cannot, touch for us what we might never touch.

We sacrifice our sleep for them to fly, and we always will.

We are merely slaves to our words, when they are the wings of our freedom.
