A Smile

When it comes right to it

            Nothing can I deny.

All I need is a smile,

            An expression worn by time.

It started as a simple thing,

A knowing wink or a charming grin,

Secrets told in darkness and trouble on the wind.

That day my life it ended,

A shock to one and all.

            Inside my heart is breaking:

            That secret was my fall.

            They look so very happy

As they walk their merry path.

I will keep my silence and they shall keep their wrath.

No, all I need is a smile

            Something tried and true.

            Keeping the world shining bright

And my heart from tearing in two.
