Smile & Pretend

All you can do is smile.

Smile, and pretend.

Pretend that everything is going to be okay.

At least until you're alone.

And then you can cry.

Then you can worry whether or not his punch and kick is going to kill you this time.

You can worry whether the man you love is going to come out and comfort you, or if this monster is here to stay.

You have to breathe.

Breathe through the pain, because you can't fight back.

You can't, and you would never try.

Because you love him.

And you believe him when he says he loves you too.

You believe him because when hes done hurting you, he holds you and tells you that he only does it because he loves you and wants to show you that he does.

But what happens when you can't take the pain anymore?

What happens when that kick he gives you, sends you flying across the room, breaking your ribs.

Or when his slap pushes you into a wall and you crack your skull.

What happens when he kills you because you loved him and didn't fight back?

It'll be too late.

Because all you did was smile and pretend.
