Smoke and Flames

I could hardly wrap my mind around you,

For you were secrets whispered in the breeze.

Looking back, I never should have found you,

Oh darling, you were never mine to seize.

But god, your eyes were warmer than the sun,

Your smile burned a promise I could taste.

With every touch I came further undone,

And so, around your finger I was laced.

I wasn’t one to burn, but you were fire,

And our first kiss a spark that set the flare.

I came alight as you stoked our flames higher,

’Til only ashen coals were left to bare.

Your lingering smoke has settled in my skin,

And still, though you are gone, I breathe you in.
