Smokey Mirrors

Sometimes I hang my head when I walk past mirrors.

Sometimes I avoid making eye contact with people.

I can see myself in their eyes,

My reflection.

But even worse, they can see me.

For that brief moment when our eyes lock

There is a bridge connecting our minds,

And sometimes,

Just sometimes, their minds are swift enough

To catch the secret lane that guides them

To my soul

And me to theirs.

Sometimes I just want nothing more than to

Hide, the phantoms in my shadows.

Sometimes I am too afraid to confront

The monsters lurking inside of them.
