So Much Depends

So much depends on the blonde haired  boy,

Who sits  in loneliness with head bowed regretting the decisions of his forefathers,

He never wanted to be  a slave master,

Never wanted to hurt the black man,

Never wanted to be an object of torture

All he wanted to be was  a boy,

Whose name doesn't connatate to  "white privilege or white supremacy"

To slave master or anything that involved chains

So much depends on the black boy,

Who tells society they can keep their prison cells,

That his skin colour is not cause for writing legislation,

That his life is worth more than a hashtag

He  defies society and becomes the next Lewis latimer

So much depends on the black haired Latino girl,

Whose waist hasn't fallen victim to gentrification .

Who still moves to the  rhythm of the cha, cha,

She still carries the dignity of her ancestors.

So much depends on the dark African boy,

Whose skin colour reminds others of midnight,

Who still remembers the smell of rain ,

The egg child of Africa,

He finally proves to the world, "archive" is in Africa's vocabulary

So much depends on the Asian foreign exchange student,

For even though he learns English,

His accent will always be a pathway that directs him home.

So much depends on the single mother,

Whose backbone is made of steel,

single mothers who tie snickers with their teeth,

Because their hands are busy ,

Young mothers whose hearts are made of gold,

As they do all they can to lift their seed above the clouds.

So much depends on father's,

Whose love stands tall like a lighthouse

Slowly  leading his daughter through life.

So much depends on the 5 year old middle east  boy,

Who is shunned because they claim his identity rhymes with terrorist.

That he is a murderer of the century,

For his life worth, has become a CNN statistic.

So much depends on the arms of the 2 year old Syrian,

Who swims the ocean, Olympic style fleeing persecution

Denied refuge his only choice was the illegal one, .

His little arms beaten by the ocean as it carefully placed his life less body on shore,

Today when you search for Aylan Kurdi, his picture has been  immortalized in pixels on someone's Facebook page.

So much depends on the girl in her hijab,

She holds on tightly to her heritage despite the trigger warnings from society .

So much depends on our generation,

We have defied social norms and made laundry, the only thing that we separate by colour.

For We are phenomenal

.
