So What If I Was
So What If I Was
by t.a.mayes & friends
I’m not gay, but so what if I was
Would you now feel uncomfortable
when I tell you I love you
I’m not black, but so what if I was
would you now feel obligated
to tell me you have lots of black friends
I’m not deaf, but so what if I was
would you now feel frustrated
and think by talking louder I will hear you
I’m not a woman, but so what if I was
would you now feel superior
and look at me as something to have
I’m not Muslim, but so what if I was
would you now think I’m a threat
fearful without even knowing me
I’m not overweight, but so what if I was
would you now think less of me
unaware of the shame I feel
I’m not Jehovah's Witness, but so what if I was,
would you now react with a cold shoulder
slamming the door in my face
I’m not democrat or republican but so what if I was
would you now think that how I feel is wrong
protesting my ideas with shouts and signs
I'm not old, but so what if I was
would you now discredit what I had to say
dismissing what I still have to offer
I don’t have cancer, but so what if I did
would you now look at me with sorrow
unconsciously pulling away from me
I’m not a cop, but so what if I were
would you now not appreciate what I do
disrespecting my job to protect
I’m not a skinny person, but so what if I was
would you now love me differently
with your perception of me changing
I’m not disabled, but so what if I were
would now you feel unease around me
hiding your discomfort behind a smile
