Social Darwinism

Eugene can be an amazing place,

but we have a high transient population

and the criminalization of poverty continues.

With laws like the one forbidding dogs downtown,

"no backpack" store policies

and bars diving benches into

three "equal" sections.

I'm sorry, man,

but I ain't got anything to give you.

I'm struggling to get by too;

just in a different manner.

I'm not homeless,

but I've been there and I know, sir.

I'm sorry,

but I only have three dollars.

People sleep under awnings

while businesspeople ignore them

on their way to work.

The suits meet the rags

and the former gets to leave

when they get uncomfortable.
