The Society We Live In

We live in a society where you can be torn apart

By someone behind a computer screen

Where people can deprive us of our pride

By saying we’re worth nothing

A society where you live in fear

Where your life may be in the hands of an officer

Whether you live or die, or justice may be served

All depends on the color of your skin

A society where Tom Robinson is accused of rape 

In To Kill a Mockingbird because blacks weren't accepted

But in reality each and every one of us is a mockingbird ourselves

Being closer to the thought of oblivion is inevitable because we're like a grenade 

Desperately being vulnerable to explode any second of our life

A society where the life of Eric Garner is left in the hands of a mere officer

The inevitable death that awaits him as he was unjustly placed in a chokehold

Even after constantly yelling "I can't breathe!"

How can we tell our children that we live in a society so defined as "equal?"

Where in reality people are being mistreated for who they are as a person

When the concept of black lives matter doesn't even matter in our society

Where is justice today?

When can we turn away from cultures we don't understand, 

But instead embrace them and try to learn from their beliefs

When will we see a society when justice is rightfully served?

Where is justice today?

Together, we can make a change

Together, we will rise up like a phoenix, 

Over the mountains of injustice

And end discrimination for all
