Soft

We were always treated as soft,

fragile,

breakable creatures.

We grew up unaware of our own strengths,

and as such,

we didn't know what to expect

when we broke our bones

or tore our skin.

We couldn't have known

how even frightened,

soft-spoken words

could inflict such pain.

Especially when these words are spoken

to ourselves.

We were clueless to the power of

down-turned gaze

and shuffling walk.

The power of books clutched

to our chests like shields

and muttered apologies.

We didn't realize the power

held within soft-spoken actions.

That they had the power to break.

To shatter and bust,

and even slowly burn away.

We were taught to be soft,

fragile,

breakable creatures.

To yield to those raised

to know their own strengths.

So we don't know what to expect

when we speak our minds,

or even just raise our voices.

We don't know

how out-spoken words

can instill such grace,

confidence,

happiness.

We're clueless to the power of a

straight-forward gaze

and self-assured strut.

The power of self-love clutched

inside our chests like shields,

and unapologetic self-awareness.

We don't realize the power

of self-care.

That it has the power to mend.

To repair and restore,

and even piece together fractured ego.

So it's time we learn

that we're the only one we have to apologize to.

That hiding away is erasing our light.

We must not yield to those raised in power,

but raise ourselves to their level,

and know we belong.

I'm from South Dakota and I love poetry. In every spare moment I am composing lines to new works in my head, and I am always working to gain inspiration from everything around me. I play the piano, guitar, ukulele, banjo, and percussion. I love to draw and I love anything that involves zombies. Someday I will see the world.
