Softer Light

She’s in the dark

hollow eyes

facing another sleepless night.

Excruciating,

time drags by.

Anxiety of a wasted life.

Grasping threads of hope

to keep from drowning

in an onslaught of living nightmares.

One by one

Her worst fears come true.

She finds herself,

unreligious,

praying for just one

to be left untouched.

That single wish given

at a hefty price

her last chance for a peaceful life.

Her face is lifted to the rain.

The future looks too bright.

Let the sun shine

on her past

as she steps to moonlight.
