The Soldier

Sometimes it hurt having you so far away,

Never seeing your sweet smile or hearing your comforting voice,

Staying up all those agonizing hours praying you would be okay,

Knowing that by leaving you made a selfless and courageous choice,

Out the window I set my worried, lonely gaze,

Reminiscing on all the times we had together,

What kept me going was knowing that you would have been home in just a few days,

Upon your departure you promised me your love forever,

The warm memories of that last day by your side quickly fade,

Two uniformed men vacate the black car that pulled up on our drive,

They gather their last thoughts as they walk, troubled glances they trade,

Slowly approaching the house, dreading what is to come when they arrive,

I open the door to the saluting men and my confidence begins to lack,

My heart shatters realizing that my brave soldier boy is never coming back.
