A Soldier's Dream

A SOLDIER'S DREAM

Covered with dust and dirt he lay
On the desert sand;
His brow was wet, his lips were parched,
A gun clutched in his hand.
Then, through the hazy cloud of sleep,
He saw his dear homeland.

In the heavy fog of dreams,
He saw the mountains rise.
The lush valleys dipped and rang
With the mighty eagle's cries.
Once again he stood,
On the land he loved and prized.

Once again he saw his blue-eyed girl
Cooking the day away;
While his two children raced around,
Laughing in their play.
A tear slipped from his eye
As in the sun he lay.

And then he was cheering loudly,
No longer in his seat-
Screaming, dancing, bouncing around,
Jumping on his feet-
While he watched his favorite team,
Become the team to beat.

Then sitting around the campfire,
He heard the cougar roar.
And watched the stars come out-
Two, three, then four-
While roasting hot dogs
And eating smores.

Before him he saw his country’s flag-
That glorious red, white, and blue-
Flapping and waving in the wind,
Standing tried and true.
A reminder of the men who gave all,
For freedom, as he did, too.

Then the soft melody of hymns
Floated all around.
Voices singing in unison,
What a sweet, comforting sound!
As they praised their Lord and looked to the cross,
No longer lost, but found.

Covered with dust and dirt he lay
On the desert sand.
He didn’t hear the battle sounds,
Or feel, the gun clutched in his hand.
For he was surrounded by angels and light-
At last, in his True Homeland.
