Solid Ground

I am a sapling,

taking root in the ground.

My branches unwind

and curve to the sky in praise of your perfection.

I thirst for the completeness you bring

and the satisfaction I get from your nearness.

Slowly, I grow and mature.

My sorrows shake free,

the leaves falling in autumn.

They lay like the past at my base,

reminding me of where I came from.

Then, winter comes

and the ice of anger consumes me.

I grow dormant

and become unaware of your presence.

It doesn’t matter,

for you remain no matter what.

When it feels as if all hope is lost,

spring comes and warms my heart.

The ice fades and frees me.

I search for you once again.

A strange realization casts a shadow on my soul

and I know why I need you so.

I love you

for staying

for waiting

for understanding

and for the sacrifices you made

to anchor me to solid ground.
