Solitary Woe

Women and children cry

And brothers shiver in their solitude

Over a war they did not ask for

A war which no one asked for

Yet here we are, removed from it all

Seemingly romanticizing the gore

Sending our brothers, mothers, lovers

Into the fray of hiding under cover

“Protect the homeland,” they cry

But from what? We must now ask

From an enemy that can’t be beat

From a war which ends in defeat

Deep down in our hearts

We wither away like a willow tree over a creek

Knowing we should not have let them go

Will they come back? We do not know

Will they come back? We’ll never know
