The Somebodies

Are you a Nobody?

I’m a Nobody too!

See, we Nobodies are many—

Too few.

Look at the others –the Somebodies–

How they try so hard!

To be someone known.

If you want to be Somebody,

There are things you need to know,

But most important:

You’re the star of the show.

Take a snap and hashtag the caption.

Every moment is a chance—

If it isn’t posted it didn’t happen.

They learn how from the TV and magazines;

From the other somebodies,

Growing up in front of growing screens.

But no wonder!

It’s placed in their heads and hands—

How could they know?

They don’t understand.

Perhaps it’s even in their DNA!

It seems, from when they are born,

They know what to change.

Turn your heels out for a gap

And pucker your lips

To make them look big.

To be liked you must follow the script.

The way they do—

They just want to feel pretty

And show the other somebodies too.

Status update and post

So the 1,000 friends

They’ve never really met

Will like and leave a comment.

Did I not mention?

That’s a game too,

To get the most likes,

Much more than you.

Wait for ten minutes,

And if it’s not a hit,

Delete and pretend it didn’t exist.

What’s the point of trying?

If the others don’t approve;

The Somebodies have a reputation to lose.

See, Somebodies are looking

For somebody to impress.

They’ll do anything—and everything—

Even undress!

Girls so young! take so many selfies.

Be picture perfect

Though it’s not healthy.

Swipe left to add filter,

Tap to add importance,

Delete and start over

Just to look “gorgeous.”

I’ll tell you a secret,

But don’t say a word!

The Somebodies have a weakness.

They’re really just nobodies,

They’re not what they seem.

They’re really just lonely.

And trying to be seen.

That’s why they try so hard

To cover up with makeup

Their flaws and scars.

They think if other somebodies

Believe they’re perfect

Maybe they’ll become it,

But it’s only a trick.

The pretend nobodies are too busy

Maintaining their edited life—

If they’d look they’d see

All the other nobodies

In disguise.

So, Nobody, don’t try to be somebody else.

The best Somebody is your Nobody self.

--

Are you a Somebody?

I’m a Somebody too!

I think the Nobodies

Would like me and you.

The Nobodies and

Somebodies are one

And the same, who knew?
