Something Dear to You

Take a secret from your heart Something you hold close inside Something dear to you A word from grandma, now long gone A gift, a place, a longing Now, the hardest thing you could ever do Tear it free from secrecy and place it before the world Let people see your innermost self and what you've grown to be And imagine you were scorned Judged as though you had committed a crime Your secret scattered everywhere and your name branded so all would know Some wouldn't care Some would treat you as a patient to be fixed Still others would despise you only for your difference Something dear to you Instill your mind with sympathy For the people who truly feel this pain are all around You know what society has labeled them Lesbian, bisexual, gay Some know the feeling of hatred and derision Some keep their secret locked inside out of fear All know the terror of being stopped from fulfilling their hearts So think on feelings you may not know yourself Free of qualification and judgment Let lives flourish as you wish your own Make all people Despite their differences Something dear to you
