Sometimes, It's All About You

If I've learned anything in life, it's truly about what you make of it. This may seem like simple and redundant statement, but let me explain.

There will always be the folks that go out and try to conquer every mountain, big or small, and go about that way for their life. That path is great for building a resume, to get into the school you want. But I ask the question. What skill have you developed because of this? I have friends who want to go into engineering, or the medical field, or practice law, because they chose that path early on. They grew up around that career choice, and it will positively affect them in the future. Myself, however, I was never given that oppurtunity. I was told and raised with the ideal of, you want to be as well-rounded as possible. Over time, in an effort to cover all facets of growing up and deveolping as a student, the only skills I've developed and taking ownership of are moral ones such as responsibility, perserverance and honesty. Differing opinions exist on whether this path will pay off in the long run, and as a result of it, I hold a negative conotation towards it. My idea to fix this, is to let the student, the child and the learner all in one do what they want to do. If they want to do extra cirricular upon extra curricular, let them run free and enjoy it. If they choose to intelligently debate with you as to why they want to be a defense lawyer, let the arguments proceed. I was told a long time ago to never make fun of the "nerds" in school, because you will work for them one day. I believe that that statement is false, because you might work alongside them one day in a crucially important field. The people you will work for, however, are the ones who knew what they wanted to do from early on, and let nothing stop them in their path to achieve that, either by doing everything or doing one thing. To close, never let anyone tell you what to do for your career. Research, form your choice, and let nothing stop you in achieving it. Make it great.
