Song to the Lost

Song to the Lost So let’s begin… Taste the bitter wine and make the dawn be at its end A murmured word is all I need to know you’re gone, my friend A time is left for all of us But there is no time here When little candles and barbwire adorn my furrowed head Angels and angels all to sing in my memory To dance along the broken path of love’s sweet dying day Where all is but a heartbeat waiting to stop without an end To find the sick sweet posies lying along my loved one’s head And cherry blossoms and chrysanthemums are what my childhood brings A wretched song that loved us once, a smile like many things When rivers fade and pass into dust When sick and broken angels cry To feast upon the sobbing of the lover’s lullaby I remember how we planned it once That we’d sit upon this little stream to talk of days and moonlit nights To love away and dream But there is nothing that reminds me of the joy there used to be When pain was an empty word, when songs were not broken dreams I cannot bear to think of it I cannot bear to sing I screamed and wretched and bled all night But there was no one to hear my screams I sought the aged word and kissed its sweaty brow Smelling its horrendous breath that burned my throat with brine I cried my darling… Oh yes, how I’ve cried I know I shall cry no more, but on this night my tears and I communed and died We soaked our hands in the earth we reached for the roots and pulled them free The lilies of the valley bled inside our hands We did not laugh nor we did we grieve We spoke a song only silence can ever understand I clutched my broken spirit, and bowed my throbbing head I feel this in the wind and smell it rising from the earth Brimstone, ashes, coal and smoke And a hint of sandalwood Ever and ever Forever and ever Tomorrow and today I’ve sung to these fools of harrowing nightmares And they’ll drink the night away Did they ever see that last lonely bird? The yellow and red in the icy white snow It flailed its legs and arched its back It burst its lungs and screamed But there was no answering him There, gone were its dreams I sing… I sing now… I took my heart and ripped it into nothing I ravaged the emptiness and filled it with smiles instead A laughing smile and a joyous glance A murmured soft sweet whisper just for you I loved and lived and danced and sung I wrenched all hatred from the stone I am the master of life and I have conquered its story I am the knight arisen from the quest But…. I’m lost….. and all that I see is death
