Song of the Seashell

A seashell sits atop a shelf

Gathering dust and so forlorn

A child comes and leans in close

To hear the seashell mourn

She picks it up and holds it close

Listens with keen ear

As the ocean in a seashell

Sings a song for her to hear

Upon a time so long ago

I rested in the sand

But alone I was for I am not

A creature of the land

Day-by-day I waited

Resting on the beach

Yearning for the day to come

When the sea I'd finally reach

You see I wanted to rejoin

The waters of the deep

So with a hopeful heart I'd watch

The tides begin to creep

The tides would rise and I would hope

As the waters lapped the land

To fell the ocean but all I felt

Was the soaking of the sand

Countless days I waited

With a hopeful heart I'd yearn

Then one day something happened

The waves began to churn

The sky grew dark and yellow

As the winds began to howl

Seagulls screeched above the roar

And the waves were on the prowl

Torrents of rain slashed through the sky

And the waters ravaged the earth

It was on that day that I learned

How cruel the ocean's mirth

For on that day the ocean played

A terrible joke on me

The waters grabbed and bruised my form

Then flung me from the sea

I was battered and and broken, cut to the core

I wept into the ground I lay

Days flew by when a little girl came

And said she wanted to play

She picked me up and cradled me

In the palm of her small hand

Then she took me far away

Way across the land

That little girl was you

I sing to you my sorrow

For though the ocean hurt me

I'd return to it tomorrow

The seashell's song began to fade

And the small girl wiped her eyes

With a loving gaze she looked down

Said her sad goodbyes

In trembling hands the seashell journeyed

Far across the land

Till the girl knelt down and nestled it

Between the grains of sand

When the tides rose the seashell waited

As the waters met the shore

Then they came and picked it up

To part again no more

Now you know next time you hear

The ocean in a shell

It's the song of that first seashell

It's very own story to tell
