The Song of Us
I found on your own
Barely getting by from your father’s gang
Your singing voice equivalent
To a morning song
Your dark brown eyes
Met my emerald gemmed eyes
Your slicked black hair contrasted my fiery blazing hair
And our fates were sealed
By a brief introduction
A favor including me hiding you from the cops
And then a small slip of paper
With a number and several media accounts on it
After exchanging several texts and funny little nicknames
We became partners in crime, on and off of the theatre
From piano lessons to late night driving nights
I saw you come out more and more
As days turn to weeks
And weeks turn to months
I started to see you
Metamorphose slowly into a new man
I’d watch you walk into the theater
A large grin reaching your face, ear to ear
Your tall figure gained a skip in your pace
And your soft silent chuckle slowly transformed into a hearty laugh
Your dark eyes sparkled with increasing zeal
Large arms wrapping around me in a leather embrace
Like a blanket made of silk
And whisper sweet melodies in my ear
Those melodies slowly became our song
Banded with respect and understanding
As well as a possible future
Made with endless love
Then one afternoon
Tragic news spread
Of a gang leader getting arrested
On the corner of Hector Street
I’ve come to then realize that on those days
That you had to run out to ‘run some errands’
Was you supporting in the man’s gang
Quite possibly over us and our future
However, I knew this was never you
You would never want to inflict toxicity and chaos
Onto innocent bystanders and bankers
But you wanted to share your melodies with the world
When we arrived to the prison
To meet the gang leader himself
I saw a large man in an orange jumpsuit
Staring down at you as we sat down in the phone booth, hand in hand
Through the phone, you made the excuse
Of receiving gas instead of not being available for the event
Seeing through the story, the man bangs on the booth
Barking for the truth instead of simple stories
You looked down at me
And all I could do was tightly hold your hand supportively
You breathed in and breathed out slowly
And confronted the man, guilt dragging you along
You shared with the large man
Of your hopes of the future through the phone
Of your future with your melodies
And the pretty girl next door
The man stayed in silence
Mouth agape with confusion
Until he grunted through the phone
And banged on the booth louder than before
Milliseconds after, the man growled through the phone
“How’d I end up with a son like you, eh?
You’re nothing like me
Never had, never were, never will be”
Though the man left from your life in the moment
This didn’t stop you
From loving me
Or sharing our melodies
Immediately, you shoved the man aside
And rose higher than the stars
You made room for our love
And our endless melodies
Our love conquered your family’s desire
To bring anxiety and chaos into society
Our story went on, sharing many laughs and tears
And plenty of songs
Then years go by
And marriage was an immediate yes
Our children go on and share our song
The Song of Us
