Sonitum Spes
My friend got sick the other day.
The doctor said there's a bug in his brain,
That it's the worst kind of bug.
I don't like the sound
Of the doctors voice.
It's filled with fear,
And shakes,
It lacks hope.
My friend hears this news.
Along with his wife,
And two beautiful children,
And me.
I feel like I shouldn't have been there,
But he secretly tells me
He is eternally grateful for
Helping his son get through this.
He doesn't know,
He has no idea,
That I need his son, just as he needs me.
He thanks the doctor, and asks for a moment alone.
I can hear him.
He weeps.
He weeps because he is fearful
Of the bug in his brain.
The bad bug
In his brain.
He weeps because he see's a future without
Himself.
He see's his beautiful son.
He see's his beautiful daughter.
He see's his beautiful wife.
But he does not see
Himself.
He says to his brain
"You know, no matter what happens"
Another tear streaks down his red, puffy, glistening cheek
"No matter what happens"
He closes his eyes.
He holds his hands to his chest.
Eyes wide shut.
Squeezed so tight,
Not even God Himself could pull those two
Interlaced eyelids open.
"No matter what happens"
His family and I enter the room again.
He wipes the leftover moisture
From his red, puffy, glistening cheeks, and he tells
His children that he loves them.
I'm terrified.
Paralyzed,
Unable to move, but my stomach still swings back and forth.
He tells his wife that he loves her.
He tells
Me
That he loves Me.
"No matter what happens"
As the words exit his grinning mouth,
I notice something.
I notice the first signs of treatment for this
Bad Bug.
It's the kind of treatment no hospital can give a patient.
The doctor can not come in and give him a double dosage.
I notice a sound coming from his smiling face.
I notice an emotion greater than love and hate combined into one.
I notice.
I notice Hope.
"No matter what happens"
I almost explode.
Into a fiery ball of tears,
At the sound of his hopeful voice.
The sound of hope.
The sound of courage.
I hear his beautiful son laugh, and I know
That he has told a joke.
He has hope.
He has courage.
Call it a miracle.
Call it an act of God.
Call it a damned good coincidence,
Call it what you will.
The only thing you can call it,
Is the start of a winning battle.
Now with one joke told,
So saturated with the sound of
Hope,
And Courage,
All of his friends,
And family,
And that beautiful boy
And that beautiful girl,
And that beautiful wife.
And me.
We all have hope and courage.
Hope that this bug can, and will be squashed.
Hope that all wounds will heal.
Hope.
With this hope,
He now see's a future,
With his beautiful son,
With his beautiful daughter,
With his beautiful wife,
And with
Himself.
"No matter what happens"
We never stop fighting"
