A SOUND OF SILENCE

in the background soft,

a playing in me head

was Simon and Garfunkel's

'Sound of Silence,'

on this another Christmas day.

'twas going to be a quiet one,

far away from maddening crowds,

gone are the days,

of hectic programming,

shopping lists

and utter pandemoniums,

in order to feed,

the starving crowds of Philistines,

all wanting to partake

of a piece of Christmas cake,

a thankless gesture from most,

early start on this a pagan day,

as ovens quickly devour

another turkey, chicken and duck,

brandy added to custard made,

fromage frais to cheese-board last,

no white Christmas for festive fare,

only a box of Cadbury Roses

to be shared

in a penny-pinching prudence,

the perceived best is always kept to last,

green tree in corner alone,

with presents of hope and despair,

stowed neatly underneath,

away from little mitts and prying eyes

hoping for an early peek,

or do they go a wondering why;

what will go back?

to the place of purchase bought,

refunds in the making,

along with shopping dockets

scrunched!

so, in the background soft;

a playing in  me head

a sound of silence......
