Speak From The Brain
Hearts, I think, are metronomes.
They tick in time and never seem to falter, never really change.
They’re persistent and monotonous and beat with a constant reminder
That forever is drawing to a close.
Philosophers chose to point at the heart and decide that that’s the source of the ‘I Love You’s.
But I think it’s the brain that makes the music, and the heart that just keeps time.
Because the brain controls my eyes when I look into hers,
And the heart just beats along when I tell her how she’s the only thing I could ever want.
It’s the brain that pulls at my tongue like a puppet on strings
Makes my vocal cords stretch so I might sing my love for her
From mountains my brain made my feet climb,
And still my heart keeps time.
And it’s my brain that remembers all the kind words she said in the middle of the night
When the connect-the-dot stars watched with “ooh”s and “ahh”s.
It’s my brain that moved my hand to the crook of her neck to cradle her chin
And tell her I would love her until the last dawn
It was my brain that broke the ice, and my heart that just beat on.
I never believed in speaking “from the heart”
Because I thought that was bullshit
And that I should speak from the brain instead.
Because the mastermind was hid behind my eyes inside my head
And the heart was a muscle that had no control.
It’s my brain that loves her.
It’s my brain that whispers sweet nothings in her ear
That cries and begs her to stay just a little while longer
That demands explanations and sits in adoration when she speaks
When she tells me that she needs me
That I’m the stitch that keeps her tethered to this world and without me
She’d crumble into dusty pieces
It’s my brain that tells my eyes to cry and
Hold her closer
And my heart doesn’t care.
So at night, when I’m with her and the passion sets in
And we fall tangled under sheets with cold toes and hot breath and God do I love you
My heart and hers can keep time all they want
Because it’s my brain that knows that I’m nothing without her
And it’s her brain that knows that I’m thinking about her
And we’re writing the lyrics of our forever on our pillows
And our hearts are keeping time.
