Speak For Yourself--Connor Nemeroff
"You need to do this yourself," my mom said.
"I can't always do things for you."
I sighed because I knew that she was right,
but I didn't want her to know that I knew it.
I counted on her to be my voice, my spokesperson, my advocate.
She taught me how to do it on my own, but I knew if I waited long enough--
Hesitated just enough--asked the right questions;
She would heave a deep sigh and give in.
But that day--the day I realized I was growing up and being responsible--
When she said I needed to handle it myself
I held back my sigh and held up my head.
I gathered my courage, and I did the thing that needed to be done.
I will not forget the lessons she taught me,
But the most important one has been
That I could do it on my own.
