speaking without words

oftentimes in my life

i find myself at a loss for words.

when the moon touches a cloud soft,

or the sun bathes me in holy light in the field,

or an old couple brushes hands for an untold time,

there is something there that language cannot capture.

something that exists beyond the understanding of the mind.

something unspeakable, yet familiar.

powerful, yet gentle.

dangerous and kind.

i don't believe we as a people will ever be able

to reach out and touch this concept, this feeling of lonely hope, with our knowledge.

but what i do believe,

is that poetry

gets us pretty damn close.
