That Spoken Word Crap
Searching for thoughts in a thesaurus, desperate
Trying to sound like the girl next door
Don’t write like you talk!
So scratch out every word of those 6 lines scribbled,
Ball up the scraps it was on, and
Use the biggest,
the award-winning,
worthy of publishing,
scientific-bullshit words!
Though you are better—
And remember to be like the girl next door,
Read collected poetry of Phillip Larkin,
Find words you don’t comprehend in the dictionary.
Express them differently using the thesaurus,
Anthologies of English Literature and Encyclopedias.
Write only what is necessary,
dirty hands and unfulfilled minds all blanketed
by her perfect articulation.
That school girl skirt is used for ease of access,
drug use is typical of the private school,
Your SAT is higher than the neighbor’s
but she possessed a speech that scored much better
than THAT SPOKEN WORD CRAP by Ciara Roman
God-awful language your pen speaks.
They won’t understand your jargon.
Not owning the right words
Knowing what to say but not how
Turn off your ghetto.
Now even your pen is mute.
Avoid eggshells you may crack with
your 6 lines scribbled down,
Cuz that ain't poetry.
That’s that spoken-word whatchucallit
