Spring and Fall
The sun used to be so bright
I knew it wasn’t quite right
I hoped each day that it would continue to stay
If only I could make it not go away.
As the days became colder and colder
I knew that she would probably be in danger
She came in the hospital during summer
And now it has turned to fall and she is still here.
Those trees outside her hospital window used to be green
Now those orange and red leaves are surely seen
For others this scene is so beautiful but I can’t see it that way
Because she’s still in that bed and cancer is taking her away
As she lay in that white bed I hear her moaning and groaning
I see pain and fear as I hear her saying
“Brother, it hurts so much. Please hold my hand”
I told her “Yes of course. I will hold your hand and wait until you’re able to stand”
“I will hold your hand as they roll your bed away for your surgery.
I will hold your hand and get you off this misery.
I will hold your hand as they put you on chemotherapy.
I will hold your hand as long as it makes you pain-free and happy.”
The sun is now getting bright
I knew this was going to be right
I hoped each day that it would continue to stay
If only I could make it not go away.
As the days became warmer and warmer
I knew that she would probably be out of danger
She came out of the hospital during winter
And now it has turned to summer and she’s home and still here.
Those trees outside her bedroom window used to be bare
Now they have blossomed back to green and a sight to share
This sight is so beautiful and it takes my breathe away
With her pink cheeks, bright smiles, long hair…she’s here to stay.
As she sat in that chair, I hear her laughing and giggling
I don’t see pain and fear and I hear her saying
“Brother, it hurts so much to laugh. Please hold my hand!”
I told her “Yes of course. I will hold your hand and wait until you’re able to stand”
“I will hold your hand as you go back to school.
I will hold your hand when your friends are not cool.
I will hold your hand as you embark on a new journey.
I will hold your hand as long as it makes you pain-free and happy.”
