Stagehand
I live in the dark and control the lights;
I can turn on the day and bring about the night.
I control your surroundings;
I create castle and country and home and wild.
I censor what you see; I pull the strings;
I built this world for a moment in time.
I hide in the dark; I issue the orders.
I am the commander; you see me not.
I strung the stars; I painted the hearth;
I hold the keys to the inside.
I live up high and on the scuffed black wood;
I’m wrapped in dark from high to low.
I step without sound.
I spot every flaw.
I hold my breath while you watch on.
I’m waiting in the black, on the balls of my feet, to pull close those heavy blue eyelids
You’re amazed,
You’re entranced,
In thanks you clap and holler.
And I slip out the back.
