Star and Shadow

A distant star, once burning bright Against the confines of the night Now staves off very well-placed doubt That, soon, its lights may all go out. And here on Earth the silence roars Across the oceans, heaths, and moors. The world’s become a shadowland With no one left to take a stand The shadows mask and grin and lie They hide our fear and muffle our sighs And in this shadowland today We’ve grown accustomed to the ways Courage, bravery, both forgotten A new world, cruelly begotten Truth and honor, all virtues gone No real point in pressing on But lonely star in vacant space Beams out memory and trace Of what we lost some time ago And I’ll make sure it’s quid pro quo That star and I together know The world is good (and ever so).
