Stars

The beauty of the stars is yet unmatched The twinkle of a light I cannot reach As I remain aware and yet detached I listen to their great but silent speech Through blackness deep I sense them waiting there They watch and calmly through my eyes they glow I send them silent glances, then a prayer The echoes of my voice, so soft, so low Will never reach the heav’nly pricks of light Will never hope to pierce that blackest lake I am too far away to reach that height And yet am close enough for comfort’s sake The stars I see look back as through a gate Too near, too far to change my certain fate.
