Started With a Whistle

Started with a
Whistle...
As I ride my bike
in the sunlight
Blowing tunes
At high noon
Harmonizing with the playful cries
of children
playing futbol over in the streets
with no shoes on their feet
but smiles wide enough to make me feel
complete...completely in love
with the joy in their hearts

Started with a
Whistle...
Doing mischievous things with my friends
stealing mangoes from the carts
that be waiting for sales to begin
Running...
Running free and wild amongst the trees
running past all the elders resting heavily
in the summer breeze...breezing the day away
with no sadness in their hearts

It started with a whistle
But ended with a
friend
who was always right across from us
Giving a helping hand
Who saw the world around them
and wanted to give more
to those who needed something more
than no roof and dirt floors
They gave people beds to sleep in
and shoes to wear to school
and gave me a chance to live life
without stealing like a fool

I'm glad I learned to read and write
at a very young age
and I'm now expressing my gratitude
on this very page.
