As a child

"I love you" was an expression

My parents said it to me

To show their affection

They would hold me

And say they love me

They would drop me off

And say they love me

I would always say it back

Because I know they truly did

Nowadays

People just say it to say it

So when someone says it

I don't know how to take it

The statement is so cliche'

People just say it

To get what they want

They don't say it

To be real and true

They say it

To pick at you

Until you accept them

And when you do

They will forget you

It is used

To take advantage of you

Until you're left neglected and rejected

Now

I'm not gonna lie

Some people mean what they say

But the statement has been misused and abused

To the point where we don't know

Who's lying or telling the truth
