Staying Positive is The Key!
Shuffling feet, running, skipping, sprinting,
In converse, in boots, in slippers, even in nothing,
I've seen it all on this average college campus
Full of original people, some with high hopes, soaring dreams,
And others are just trying to get unlost in the maze.
Are we all just here treading water? Sometimes I swear that it’s true
When I look to you and ask “What do you plan to do with your life after your education is through?”
And I’m ashamed to hear
“I haven’t decided what about you?”
Some are here because they know life is all about money
Gotta be educated if we want money and gotta
Make money if we want to be happy.
God, if gold was edible, we’d all want to be fat…
But some of us, like me, want more than that.
I want knowledge to lift me off my feet,
I want to gain, retain, and teach.
Meet my eyes and hold my gaze if this is what you want to reach…
Then there’s the sociality of it all,
The meet and greet and let me just love you mentality,
The desire for acceptance, common interests, not being alone.
We’ve all felt this at least once before.
I watch her sitting in the corner, staring over at him
And I know exactly what she’s thinking, can see it burning in her eyes
She secretly wants him but never will have him...
I hope she knows that someone else knows how she feels, too.
Why do I let my emotions affect my learning?
Why do I shy away when you meet my eyes?
Why do we all walk around following the same routine?
When we should be dancing and singing spontaneously?
Oh, right, I forgot, society has condemned us
Into becoming a “controlled weird” a “controlled happy”
One wrong step and you could be judged
Why are we the ones fooling ourselves? We’re smarter than this.
I close my eyes and listen to the sounds:
Whispering, laughing, pages of textbooks turning,
Someone typing on a laptop, eating a sandwich,
Some girl rap-singing the same line over and over again
“Positivity is the key to life’s lock. Positivity is the key. Put that on repeat.”
Open my tired eyes, look at the time, my next class is in five minutes.
Shit! I forgot to do the reading, too late now, I hope mercy is given.
Positivity is the key to life’s lock. Positivity is the key. Put that on repeat.
Rushing out of the building, sun and air hit my face
A mixture of eyes, mouths, noses, hair, rush past me in a blur.
I reach the classroom with seconds to spare,
Sit down and smile at the professor, teacher’s pet that’s me…
If it was a beautiful, metaphorical poem you were looking for
Sorry to disappoint, but when it comes to the average life
Of an original college student…well, there you have it.
All I want to do is learn—and soar, and soar, and soar…
Shuffling feet, running, skipping, sprinting,
In converse, in boots, in slippers, even in nothing,
I've seen it all on this average college campus full of people,
Some with high hopes, others just trying to get unlost in the maze…
Positivity is the key to life’s lock. Positivity is the key. Put that on repeat.
