Steel Cage
I refuse to be your floor mat
Although I choose that
I cannot keep getting drunk and hearing you sob story
We are using each other for self-centered glory
Now I feel empty, back at the start
yet I’m not sad,
I’ve been here before in a different heart
Our love was not real.
We just wanted to steal
what we could get,
and leave the rest, until we reached our best
on stilts made from each other.
And while they decayed
the road narrowed and the space around grew large
giving us opportunity to grow
But that is not what we have chose
Inside this steel cage together
we wait for better weather
where we won’t have to hide inside
As my mind slowly dies
I start to recognize my despise
and wish I was wise
Inside this steel cage I remain
learning about myself with each stab and slice
Not just from you but from myself as well
I think I have the key, at least for me
For I know I could exit this hell if the other side wasn’t so ominous
For I walk down the street and scour in retreat
seeing all these cages suspended in air
Groups and troops, large cities, some small some wide
I wonder what they’re thinking inside
Cages in cages no one can see the steel that engulfs their surroundings
Living with a patch on their eye
to protect themselves from past and further exposure
with the possibilities of blood and maybe even composure
As I start to drift my mind stays still
observing you in this still,
wishing I could help, knowing I can only help myself
For I am still in this cage
with pent up rage at myself.
And maybe its all an illusion
just our mind wishing for a conclusion
that only exists in the vast abyss of the human soul
That is our ultimate goal.
