Stereotypes

Society is so quick to judge me, when they don't even know my first name African Americans are perceived as one, not different, but all just the same The stereotypes associated with African Americans, especially the women, are quite ridiculous I mean who made you God and gave you the right to ridicule us Single mothers, lazy, welfare recipients, promiscuous, ignorant, loud and ghetto, the list goes on It amazes me how prejudice people can be when there are so many phenomenal black women to prove these stereotypes wrong We all know of the big names like Beyonce, Michelle Obama, and Oprah Winfrey But what about the regular black women like me Here is a little insight on my story I grew up in a single parent home, but my life was far from impoverished I was blessed with a hard-working mother who catered to my every wish She brought me up right, in the church, teaching me respectable morals and values I wouldn't change one thing about my upbringing even if I had the chance to Thanks to my mother, I grew up to be a very determined and goal-oriented young lady So tell me again, how am I lazy? I am completing my first year of college with an outstanding GPA Yet simple-mindedness and ignorance is all that crosses your mind when you look my way The world may experience less ethnocentrism and inequality If you weren't so benighted, judgemental, and discriminatory I am not the stereotype you associate with me I am an ambitious, intelligent, broad-minded black woman with an astounding personality But you would know that if you stopped judging me and took the time to get to know me
