Stop the Repeat

I am done.

I am done listening to this garbage all the time.

No longer only in my history classes

But in English, too.

And I’m waiting for the day they bring it up in my math courses.

“If 400 Jews were killed in the first concentration camp,

And 693 Jews were killed in the second,

With 1,200 Jews killed in three camps,

How many Jews were killed in the third camp?”

That is an assignment I would refuse to do.

But all these assignments I will throw back at you,

All the essays and notes and readings.

Because I am done.

Finished.

With this asinine rehashing of my heritage’s past.

Year,

After year,

After year.

Getting the same facts,

Watching the same movies,

Reading the same books.

I don’t need to be reminded every semester

That my people were prosecuted and punished for what they believed.

You’re trying to teach our children about the past

So we don’t repeat it in the future.

But we already know that the world is dark,

That governments make mistakes

And their people let them.

But the Devil is clever and hides his cruelty.

So hide that from me-

The deaths of the chosen,

And the different,

And broken-

Because ignorance really is bliss.
