The Stories Behind A Princess

“You must be married to a prince.”

The bronzed trumpets sounded as some arrogant prince walked in the palace.  I could already tell that this was not going to go well.  How he looked, how he walked, just everything about, screamed “No”!  He introduced himself to my parents, the King and Queen, as I uninterestedly stared at the palace floor.  I thought to myself why I had to meet these snobby princes every week.  It was getting old.  “How long does this have to go on?” I mumbled to myself.  In my mind I felt that everyone wanted me to get married just because the people wanted a King and not just a Queen, like I would be.  Others probably just want our relationship with the empires across the desert to get better if I married one of their princes.  Either way, I do not want to marry some rich prince from far away…even if it does make my people happy.  What about my feelings and thoughts?  Why can’t I be happy?  “If I do marry… I want it to be for love.”

“I’ve never had any real friends.”

Dear Diary,

Today was horrible.  It was a mess! I found out that my best friends only liked me because I’m a princess.  I thought they cared about me!  I thought we looked out for each other.  But I guess not.  Today, they didn’t even try to hide it.  My closet friend told me that we were never friends and it was all fake.  I wanted to cry right there, but I couldn’t let her see how hurt I was.  I felt terrible, so I just ran back to the palace.  I told Rajah all about it.  He might just be my only true friend even though he’s my pet tiger.  I just can’t believe this happened to me.  Nothing seems to ever work out for me … and it’s all because I’m a princess.  Any potential friend just wants my money!  Any potential husband just wants my status! And the people of Agrabah expect me to be alright with it!  They still want me to behave like a “princess”.  Well, “then maybe I don’t want to be a princess anymore.”

                                                                                                                                                                                                                  - Princess Jasmine

“You’re not free to make your own choices”.

“Mom, I’m going out to the market place”, I said as I ran out of my room.  Before I could get down the hallway my guards were standing in my way.  I told them that I would be back in an hour, but they still would not let me pass them.  After a few minutes of me, a petite princess, struggling to get pass middle-aged trained guards, my mother walked up to us.  She kindly explained to me for the umpteenth time that I could not go out alone without a palace guard.  I tried to tell her that it would look even more obvious that I was the princess if I walked around the streets with a muscular man.  But of course, she said either to stay at home or go with the palace guard.  Naturally, I chose the latter to have some amount of freedom.  However, on the way to the market, I developed my plans to escape.  I had already dressed in a brown-colored dress to fit in with the civilians so I could walk amongst my own people.  After getting away from my guard, I wandered the streets of Agrabah.  I even got into some trouble too, but I’m glad I did.  If I hadn’t, I would have never met that man that changed my life forever.

“A whole new world”

Dear Diary,

I can’t even believe what has been going on these past few weeks.  After meeting the man of my dreams, my life hasn’t been the same.  Aladdin has shown me things that my many years of palace life could never have taught me.  I’ve been on a magic carpet ride, met a genie, defeated Jafar, and so much more!  I honestly can’t wait for the new road that’s ahead of me.  Father even changed the law so that I can marry whom I choose!  I’m so excited and it’s all because of Aladdin.  He has shown me a whole new world and I can’t wait to share it with him!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 - Princess Jasmine
